Spix’s (Little Blue) Macaw Facts


A spix’s macaw no longer lives in the wild; today, you can get one by visiting an exotic bird breeder and looking through photos of his collection. The spix’s or little blue macaw is considered stunningly beautiful.

A spix’s macaw is extremely rare; chicks are valuable, and breeders can make a fortune by selling them. In the wild, these birds were found in Brazil, but nowadays they are kept as pets only because the wild population of these birds is already extinct. These shy birds enjoy quiet life and should not be disturbed too much, so they are not very popular as pets. 

The plumage of these birds is mostly blue; the head and neck are grayish blue; the breast and belly are green; the irises of the eyes are bright yellow. These parrots grow up to 22 inches in length and up to 25 inches in wingspan.
