POICEPHALUS BOOKS
Guide to the Senegal Parrot and Its Family
by Mattie Sue Athan, Dianalee Deter, Susan Green (Photographer)
Our Review:
This book covers almost every element of what you need to know about having a Poicephalus. I can’t think of anything they left out, except that they don’t get into teaching the bird to communicate. There are high-quality images of the many species scattered throughout the book. If you have a Poicephalus or are considering getting one, this is a must-have.

Our Review:
There is some great parrot information in this book. The chapters are Introducing the Parrot, What Makes a Parrot a Parrot?, Setting Up Home, Making the Choice, Arriving Home, Caring For Your Parrot, Behavior and Training, Diet and Nutrition, Breeding Parrots, Incubating and Hand-Rearing, Common Health Problems and Diseases, Parrot Breeds, Rare and Endangered Parrots. There is only a photo of two Senegals, but there are short writeups on all seven Poicephalus species in captivity.

Our Review:
This book has really incredible photos. It’s divided into Waxbills and Related Species, Weavers and Whydahs, Canaries and Related Finches, Quails and Pheasants, Softbills, Australian Parakeets, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Lories and Lorikeets, Parrots, and Doves and Pigeons. Each species has a description covering the area of origin and some breeding information. The Poicephalus mentioned are the Senegals, Meyer’s, Ruppell’s, Red Bellieds, and Jardine’s.

Cage and Aviary Bird Survival Manual: A Comprehensive Family-By-Family Guide to Keeping Cage and Aviary Birds
by Graham Wellstead
Our Review:
There are several sections in this book–Ducks and Geese, Birds of Prey, Pigeons and Doves, Pheasants and Quail, Parrots, Small Softbills, Small Seed Eaters, and Starlings and Larger Softbills. For Poicephalus, it only contains the Senegal. The photos in this British authored book are simply wonderful! There is some general bird information in the book as well–Cages, Bird Room, and Aviaries, Feeding, Breeding, and Dealing with Disease.
Simon and Schuster’s Guide to Pet Birds
by Matthew M. Vriends
Our Review:
This book has 100 pages of pet bird species. Senegal, Meyer’s, and Ruppell’s are the sole species of Poicephalus. There are 100 pages of bird material in the beginning, including history, housing, breeding, finding and selecting good birds, diet, illness and obesity, and so on.
