I have been breeding parrots and bringing them up both by hand and in their nests for a good number of years now. I began by doing a weight and development rate comparison between the infants I hand-reared and those whose parents were caring for them.
I then began experimenting with different feeding formulae until I found one that provided me with results that were comparable. This was before the time when formulae could be purchased ready-made from a store. After that, I use “Kaytee Exact” or “Pretty Bird,” but there are dozens of other brands that will also provide you with satisfactory results.
It was difficult to determine the appropriate weight of a newborn at any given stage of its growth as well as the appropriate amount of food to feed it at that weight. In the event that other people have the same concerns with hand parenting parrots, I decided to replicate my rearing sheets and leave out any personal data that could be relevant to my own birds since not all of these sheets apply to my own birds. The references to feeding times are:
- 2 hourly feeds (9 times daily) – from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- 3 hourly feeds – 7 a.m.; 9 a.m.; 11 a.m. and then every 3 hours to 11 p.m.
- 4 hourly feeds (5 times daily) – 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- 5 hourly feeds (4 times daily) – 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- 3 times daily – morning, mid-afternoon and late evening.
- Twice daily – late morning and late evening
- Once-daily – late evening feed to ensure they have a full crop overnight.
