I have been breeding parrots and bringing them up both by hand and in their nests for a good number of years now. I began by doing a weight and development rate comparison between the infants I hand-reared and those whose parents were caring for them.
I then began experimenting with different feeding formulae until I found one that provided me with results that were comparable. This was before the time when formulae could be purchased ready-made from a store. If you would like the recipe for the homemade formula that I use for the first few days of the infants’ lives, please read this blog.
After that, I use “Kaytee Exact” or “Pretty Bird,” but there are dozens of other brands that will also provide you with satisfactory results.
It was difficult to determine the appropriate weight of a newborn at any given stage of its growth as well as the appropriate amount of food to feed it at that weight. In the event that other people have the same concerns with hand parenting parrots, I decided to replicate my rearing sheets and leave out any personal data that could be relevant to my own birds since not all of these sheets apply to my own birds. Check out the images below for more information on the different parrot species.
The references to feeding times are:
- 2 hourly feeds (9 times daily) – from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- 3 hourly feeds – 7 a.m.; 9 a.m.; 11 a.m. and then every 3 hours to 11 p.m.
- 4 hourly feeds (5 times daily) – 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- 5 hourly feeds (4 times daily) – 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- 3 times daily – morning, mid-afternoon and late evening.
- Twice daily – late morning and late evening
- Once-daily – late evening feed to ensure they have a full crop overnight.
After the pet bird is independent, the feeding schedule will obviously change. You can read more about pet parrot feeding times here.
I really hope the records are helpful to you. Please get in touch with me if you are responsible for parenting a baby for which I have not yet prepared a rearing record. I have hundreds of rearing sheets for a wide variety of species, but only a select selection of those sheets are posted on this website at any one time. Please get in touch with me if you have any concerns about the sort of feed or the temperature requirements. Do not be concerned since it is human nature to err, and it is likely that someone, somewhere, has done the same mistake before you.
