Many people believe that grapefruit seed is an underappreciated gem. It cleans, protects, and preserves delicate foods, and studies show that it is an efficient natural antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-protozoan, and antiseptic disinfection. Aviculturists have been using it for bird-related reasons for numerous years.
Grapefruit seed extract has been evaluated and verified by the FDA and USDA, as well as a number of doctors, in the years following its discovery. Grapefruit seed extract’s active component is non-toxic and is derived from grapefruit seed and pulp. Polyphenolic chemicals abound in this liquid. In laboratory experiments, GSE was shown to be 10 to 100 times more efficient as a disinfectant than chlorine, colloidal silver, and iodine. GSE was studied by the US Department of Agriculture and shown to be effective against four animal viruses, including avian influenza.
Uses –
Add to Drinking Water – 1 drop of GSE in 8 ounces of water inhibits pathogen development and eliminates existing parasites.
- All Purpose Cleaner – Add 15-30 drops of extract to any 32 oz pump sprayer filled with your preferred cleaner, or plain water. Use on all home and aviary surfaces.
- Antibacterial Soap – To an eight-ounce pump bottle of your preferred hand soap, add 10-15 drops of GSE.
- Carpet Cleaning – Add 10-15 drops per gallon in the reservoir to destroy staph, strep, aspergillus, salmonella, and other harmful organisms.
- Cleaning Chicks After Feeding – Wet the cleaning cloth with 2-3 drops GSE in a big basin of warm water.
- Cleaning a Cutting Board, Perches, and Other Wood Surfaces – Apply 5-10 drops of extract to a cutting surface and work it into the whole board with a moist sponge or dishcloth. Set aside for at least 60 minutes. Before usage, rinse with water. As an alternative, combine 1 tablespoon GSE in 16 ounces of water and spray or dip perches for 30 minutes. Thoroughly rinse and dry your hair.
- Dish and Utensil Cleaner – Add 10-20 drops of extract to the dishwashing water in the sink or to the final rinse. You could do the same with dishwashers.
- Laundry Disinfection – Add 10-15 drops of GSE to the final rinse water.
- Preventing Algae Growth in Humidifiers and Incubators – Add 3-4 teaspoons of GSE per gallon of water in the reservoir.
- Mold Prevention in Sprouted Seeds – For the first soak water and subsequent rinse water, use 1 tablespoon GSE per gallon of water.
- Skin Rinse (for mild skin irritations and hand cleaning) – Combine 1-2 drops per tablespoon.
- Vegetable Wash (Sink Washing) – Pour 20 drops or more of the extract into a sink full of cold water. Soak any veggies or fruits for a few minutes. (Spray Washing) Use a sprayer pump to add 20 drops per 32oz bottle of water. Shake vigorously before spraying on any veggies or fruits. When finished, rinse thoroughly.
