Supplements

Nearly all breeders of exotic birds, including Budgerigars and other species, provide their birds with dietary supplements of some kind. The actual meal that is given to the birds can have a great deal of variety, but the focus of this article is going to be solely on the supplements that are added to the feeding schedule. Eggfoods are the most common brand name for the pre-packaged supplements that are used almost exclusively. During the breeding season, when there are chicks in the nest, or when the birds are going through a significant molt, these are the times when they are customarily provided to the birds. The manner in which these dietary supplements are delivered is variable and will be discussed in further detail later on in this piece. For the time being, the numerous supplements have been compiled into a list for you to contrast and compare their own contents. What they employ to create their product, which determines both its price and its substance. Don’t forget to factor in the appropriate amount of tax, and don’t forget to tack on the cost of shipping and handling if the item is being shipped from outside the local region.

Volkman Gourmet Eggfood

The Volkman Seed Co. in Ceres, California is responsible for the production of a Gourmet Eggfood. After experiencing difficulties in acquiring Ce’De’, Volkman made the decision to begin production of this substance. Breeders were making do without an Eggfood, and Volkman came to the conclusion that it was high time for a local company to provide a high-quality item that would satisfy the requirements of breeders. Volkman founded Eggfood. They finally had a product that they were confident enough in to brand with the Volkman name after putting in a significant amount of work and conducting extensive study. The Featherglow Avian Diets are among the best nutritional mixes available anywhere in the world, and they were designed specifically with pet birds in mind. Their eggfood does not deviate from their idea that a product must be made with just natural and high-quality components in order to live up to their expectations. They have developed a solution in collaboration with laboratories and avian researchers that will supply the essential vitamins and minerals for your birds to reach their full potential.

Scott brand Petamine

F.W. Kellogg, the founder and proprietor of Kellogg Seed Co., recognized the need for improved avian nutrition in the year 1918. Kellogg, like other bird breeders of his day, struggled with continuous issues such as low fertility, a low hatch rate, and poor feather quality, to name a few. Because of his extensive network, Kellogg was able to recruit some of the best biochemists in the world to investigate what was causing these issues. His investigation led to the development of the Petamine Feeding Formula. Despite the fact that Scott has taken over manufacture of Petamine, they assure us that they still adhere to the recipe that was used when they developed the product.

Note that although the two oils described above are intended for horses, many breeders feed them to their birds as a supplemental source of nutrition for the birds they raise.

That only covers a few of the many different kinds of supplements that are available today. I really hope that you were able to contrast the various features and costs thanks to this. I am well aware that there are many more items that are not included on this list. I went with the ones that are utilized more frequently or that either I or other breeders that I am familiar with have had direct experience with. After being given an overview of supplements, your next question is probably how to administer them to your birds.

There are a few different approaches. Once you have chosen which supplement to use, the manufacturer will typically include instructions on the correct amount as well as how they believe it should be administered to your birds on the product’s packaging. Some can be fed in their current state. It is sufficient to place part of the supplement in a treat cup and then transfer the cup to the enclosure. Some people recommend mixing it together with carrot seed or freshly grated carrot. Cornbread is something that a lot of breeders I know cook for their birds. They replace the milk called for in the cornmeal mix with water, add a variety of bird treats, and then bake the cornbread. If the cornbread mix calls for milk, they use water instead. Corn and peas or vegetables of any kind, including grated carrot, are some examples of the items that can be added, in addition to the supplement itself, of course. They bake numerous loaves of bread, and whatever isn’t consumed immediately can be stored in the freezer for consumption throughout the following week. A lot of breeders will take the seed that they provide to the birds to consume and mix in a little bit of oil (wheat germ, cod liver oil or both). The supplement is then added to the seed that has been coated in oil. Because of this, the supplement is able to adhere to the seed, and it is hoped that the birds would consume some of the supplement along with the seed.

I really hope that this has sparked some interesting ideas in your head. An opportunity to examine the equipment that you use with your birds. How does it stack up against other products, and does it accomplish what you need it to? If you have any questions, you should go to the club that serves your area and ask the breeders that work there. If you aren’t aware of any clubs in the area, go online to the Aviary Bird Society website (http://www.aviarybirds.com/abs.htm) and post a question there asking for information about clubs in the area. For those of you who keep exotic birds, check out the club listings in BirdTalk magazine or go to the BirdBreeder website online. Best wishes for happy and thriving Birds.
